Felony Arrest After Routine Traffic Stop Near Atlanta

Atlanta, Ga. - According to reports out of nearby Coweta County, a driver was stopped for what was described as “traffic violations.”

The stop resulted in felony drug trafficking charges when officers searched the vehicle and discovered over 10 pounds of marijuana. As an Atlanta DUI Lawyer, I write about this concept a lot - the idea that a minor traffic violation can lead to arrests and serious charges. Most drivers on the road do not consider that the majority of the time this is the first step in a charge for DUI in Atlanta or drug possession.

In today's post, I will outline the connection between traffic violations and major investigations for DUI.

DUI Related Offenses

Routine traffic stops occur from  If you have been arrested and charged with DUI, you probably were given other traffic offenses or other related charges.  For example, generally before being charged with a DUI, a driver has been pulled over for some other offense such as:

• Speeding
• Failing to maintain lane
• Texting while driving
• Illegal passing
• Leaving the scene of an accident
• Violating the headlights requirement
• Following too closely
• Racing
• Failing to obey a traffic control device, etc.

These are just a few examples of routine traffic stops. From there, the officer involved has access to determine whether or not further investigation is needed, which is what leads to more serious charges.
