O.C.G.A. §40-6-180 states:

No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard for the actual and potential hazards then existing. Consistently with the foregoing, every person shall drive at a reasonable and prudent speed when approaching and crossing an intersection or railroad grade crossing, when approaching and going around a curve, when approaching and traversing a hill crest, when traveling upon any narrow or winding roadway, and when special hazards exist with respect to pedestrians or other traffic or by reason of weather or highway conditions.

One of the most questions we hear when speaking with a client about speeding is how many points will this add to their license. According to the Department of Driver's Services, points for speeding are as follows:

• If driving less than 15 miles over the speed limit- no points will be assessed on your license.
• If driving between 15-18 miles over the speed limit: 2 points
• 19-23 miles over the limit: 3 points
• 24-33 miles over the limit: 4 points
• 34 or more miles over the speed limit: 6 points

While 2 or 3 points may not seem like a big deal, remember that for a person over 21, an accumulation of 15 or more points in a 24 month period will lead to your license being suspended for six months. For drivers under 21, 4 points will lead to a license suspension.
